Sunderland WFC were formed in 2002 following a merger between East Durham Houghall Kestrels and Sunderland Ladies.
They compete in the Womens' Premier League and were crowned champions in 2010-11 - the first time the club have won such an honour.
The ladies' team, managed by the long-serving Mick Mulhern, receive official backing from Sunderland AFC and play their home games at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground.
In addition to their league title, Mulhern's team reached the final of the FA Cup in 2009, losing 2-1 to then-league champions Arsenal at Pride Park.
The club have produced a number of international players and a number of former players now ply their trade in the semi-professional Womens' Super League.
